The Doré Gallery, Gustave Doré, and Christ Leaving the Praetorium
The Doré Gallery at 35 New Bond Street, London, opened in 1874 to exhibit and publicise the work of French artist Gustave Doré (1832–1883). Doré’s engravings, paintings, and sculptures were internationally celebrated for their dramatic style and technical mastery.
More on the Doré Gallery’s history.
The gallery closed by the start of the First World War. In December 1878, the estate of B. Selby Lowndes purchased a major Doré engraving, Christ Leaving the Praetorium, from the Doré Gallery.
