The texture of everyday life gone by

Walter Nathan Harris 1947 Diary

Walter  Nathan Harris in 1947. ‘Wally’ (as he referred to himself) was living at Pittville Street, Cheltenham.

The small pocket diary (5.5cm x 8.5cm) provides us with a fascinating insight into the life of a schoolboy facing exams and life generally just two years after World War Two when rationing is on as well as the tough winter of 1947.

Wally was an avid stamp collector, Meccano user and, when the water was warmer, a keen swimmer. He was attending Cheltenham Grammar School and performed to average standard. He was born on the 24th of May (because he tells us in his diary entries). We aren’t informed of his age, though he was born in 1932 or 1933, and was about 14 or 15.

Here are the extra pieces I found in his diary:

The pages of the diary are 1st quarter, 2nd quarter, 3rd quarter, 4th quarter.
