Buckner – News Cuttings 07

Obituaries, Family Records, and Community Involvement of Isabella Buckner (and descendants)

This page contains multiple identical or near-identical obituary notices for Mrs. Isabella Buckner, widow of Louis Buckner, and matriarch of a large and civically engaged Jewish family in Baltimore. The repetition suggests they were placed in different local or Jewish newspapers. There are also several unrelated community snippets and a very short obituary for William Wurtzburger. Most likely these were clipped together because they involve members of the Buckner family or their known social circles.

Key Observations:

  1. Mrs. Isabella Buckner’s Life and Legacy:
  • She died at age 84 in 1935, after a “lingering illness.”
  • Born in London and moved to the U.S. at age 8.
  • Married Louis Buckner, who predeceased her, and was the mother of ten children, many of whom were prominent in the Jewish community.
  • Actively involved in Jewish charities: Hebrew Children’s Home, Hebrew Friendly Inn, Ladies’ Auxiliary of Protective Association, and Sons of Benjamin.
  • Buried at Rose of Sharon Cemetery.
  1. Her Children and Grandchildren:
  • Names mentioned include:
    • Mrs. Minnie Holland
    • Rose J. and Miss Lydia Buckner
    • Harry, Jacob, Alexander, Julius Buckner
    • Mrs. Flora Jacobs
    • Mrs. Huldah Jacobs
    • James Buckner, etc.
  • Many of them lived in New York, New Haven, Brooklyn, suggesting that the Buckner family had spread significantly from their Baltimore roots.
  1. Clipping Redundancy:
  • There are three separate obituary clippings about Isabella Buckner, all nearly word-for-word identical, with slight differences in formatting and some line-break differences, suggesting multi-paper publication.
  1. Other Community Notes:
  • A clipping titled “Perseverance Lodge Dance” describes a local Jewish community dance event featuring a Mr. and Mrs. Goodman and several local leaders, but the top half of this article is cut off. It may have Buckner family links or simply reflect community activity.
  • Another mentions a fire that destroyed goods, possibly clipped due to its connection to local events of concern.
  • A tiny mention of a postal petition being dropped might relate to mail services in the area, or was simply in the same newspaper.

Clipping: Motor Truck and Stock of Goods Lost in Blaze

An automobile delivery truck and a large stock of shoe findings and cobbler’s supplies were destroyed in a fire which swept the one-story brick residence and stable of Morris Garzinski, in the rear of 1117 Seymour Street, early this morning.

The damage is estimated at $500.

The blaze was seen in the building at 4 a.m., and by the time the fire was noticed, the flames had gained such headway the firemen broke in and rescued what remained of the burning goods.

When the firemen arrived they found the entire building aflame, and it is believed to have originated from spontaneous combustion of rubber goods in the storage room.
